WEDERGANGER – Halfvergaan ontwaakt

‘Halfvergaan Ontwaakt’ is the debut from German Black Metallers Wederganger. The name means ‘again walker’ or revenant, but no idea what any of the rest of it is about. Musically, we are looking at mid-paced, melodic BM that concentrates on creating a vibe and rhythm that will carry the listener off on a journey. Even not understanding the lyrics I can say that this is an approach that works. Wederganger set a spell from the first chord and don’t let up at all. There is repetition. There are clean vocals, sung in a ritualistic baritone. None of the songs really wow when taken on their own – this is an album that works best played in its entirety so that the listener can be submerged in the atmosphere. This is not the BM record for someone who wants their face smashed in by ice cold riffing, nor is it one for listeners who want immediate gratification. Having said that, it is not by any means inaccessible or difficult to get into. Just that it is a story you need to hear all the way through.
