TO/DIE/FOR – Cult

To/Die/For came back from a self-imposed two year hiatus to impressive results on their sixth studio album "Samsara" in 2012. The same cannot be said for the follow up "Cult". Where do the problems start? Auto-tune elements in "Screaming Birds", the abysmal slower tempo cover for the Paula Abdul pop classic "Straight Up", electro-orientation during quieter sections of "In Black" – it just seems like this Finnish melancholic gothic rock band is going through the motions, trying to do too much for diversity’s sake instead of sticking to their strengths.
"You" has that great Sentenced meets early Billy Idol spirit (I hear a lot of "Rebel Yell" in the bridge and verse parts), but one song does not a great album make. Hopefully this is just a blip in their creativity… otherwise they need to cook up better ideas next time.
