TRIAL – Vessel

The revival of Mercyful Fate style acts continues with this Swedish quintet on their second album "Vessel". The 7 songs are split between shorter arrangements like the doomy opening title cut and energetic "To New Ends" and more haunting, epic tracks like the 8:44 "Through Bewilderment" and closing 13 minute roller coaster "Restless Blood" (think Maiden spider web licks and evil Mercyful Fate atmosphere), Linus Johansson’s unreal high screams and the twin guitar ecstasy between Andreas Johnsson and Alexander Ellström carry this record.
I’m not too crazy about the amateurish, almost cartoonish cover, but fortunately Trial’s musical output washes that first impression away. In Solitude fans will find plenty to enjoy here.
