MEDEN AGAN – Lacrima Dei

A Greek symphonic melodic metal act with virtuoso guitar heroics – not your average Nightwish-oriented band here folks, as Meden Agan inject a hefty dose of musical acrobatics on this "Lacrima Dei" album. Active for almost 10 years, their third full length is the first to feature their new soprano vocalist Maya Kampaki, who does her best to temper the soaring highs with passages of normal register melodies. Diman has a lot of neo-classical Ynwgie shred ability, throwing down speedy breaks during the title cut and "Web of Shadows" (the latter a classic dual showcase against keyboardist Tolis).
Favorites include the progressively exotic "Embrace the Sorrow" that features a mesmerizing instrumental section when the bass, keyboards, and drums do their own time signature dances and the haunting semi-ballad "Loss" that of course puts Maya’s angelic range on full display. This is certainly ideal for those who love the theatrical bombast but desire a little more teeth in the guitar department.
