‘The Reflecting Void’ is the fourth full-length for German one man Black Metal act Infestus. This is modern sounding metal that is more about darkness and introspection than about Satan and his minions. The sound isn’t too cold or hellish, therefore. Instead we have a fairly balanced production and an emphasis on creating a nuanced and evocative journey through the depths of the human psyche. Andras’s song-writing style and playing fits this description perfectly. While there are moments of brooding doom and blasting power, there are even more moments where the songs are allowed to build and progressive elements begin to creep in. This is mature sounding BM indeed.
What works best about this release is the way it moulds together no holds barred power, dark psychological meanderings, progressive guitar-work and accessible riffs and song-writing. Not many records surprise our jaded ears these days but this one does the trick. Also, this is the type of album that continues to bear fruit after multiple listens as you slip further into the mood created and discover new dark delights. Definitely worth a try.
