WINDS OF PLAGUE – Against the World

Winds of the Plague has been around for a while, but I must admit that this is my first encounter with their music. And what do we have here? Metalcore, plain and simple. The break downs, the screaming, typical riffing to the genre, complete with the clichés, such as “burn this motherfucker down” . They sound a lot like Bleeding Through, with the pseudo-Black Metal keyboards and choir-like background.
The music is fairly simple, if not simplistic. The fascination with Dimmu Borgir is apparent from the beginning of "Built for War", but then, as soon as the DB-like grooves ends, we are back to by-the-numbers metalcore.
If you like Bleeding Through’s “Declaration” this may appeal to you. To me it just sounds too bland and occasionally even boring. It’s also not very original – you can hear All Shall Perish’s ideas all over the place. But it’s solid, so 3/6 is due, even though I now strongly believe that minor experiments won’t save the metalcore genre. To paraphrase If Hope Dies, “this is a genre in need of self-destruction”.
Time for metal to go back to the underground and leave the arenas like it did in the mid 90s. It always seems to breed something new and I see no reason why this time should be any different.
