THE BURNING – Hail the Horde

THE BURNING – Hail the Horde

“Panterish”, occasionally “metalcorish”, solid metal album from one of the most inanely named band’s (next to The Showdown), The Burning. Despite the clichéd and unoriginal name, the music is actually quite decent if not great.

This is the kind of record you want to play in your car real loud when you are really pissed off. It hits the same spot as Pantera. And for a good reason, because I think these guys are the closest to Thrash Metal in the genre connotations.

The riffs and melodies are fairly original and fresh (with notable exception of "Swing the Pendulum" where the main riff seems “borrowed” from Sepultura’s "Endangered Species" ("Roots", 1996).

But there is something missing that just won’t let me lift the score above 4. I think it may be that the music written this well and so easy flowing from the speakers could use more aggression and heaviness. Perhaps this slightly commercialized, polished sound is what the guys were going for, but in my opinion, the guitars need to be downturned a tad lower. Good, then, but could have been great.
