SARI SCHORR – Running Wild

I distinctly and vividly recall the great Sari Schorr performing a forty-minute set at the WinterStorm Festival in Scotland one late afternoon a few years ago, and she and her talented bandmates blew us all away. Catchy choruses you just cannot argue with, an endless supply of shark hooks, all the power and fierce passion imaginable, and a long line of unfathomably strong and emotive vocal melodies – that is what Schorr and her compositions are all about, and the upcoming offering titled Running Wild delivers in oh so many ways.

There is something quite unique about the fact that it manages to sound both outwardly fresh and intrinsically old-school and vintage in nature. A bit of Zeppelin’s mystique and some of Joplin’s melancholy are present here as well, but Sari is unafraid to channel her own inner thoughts and feelings into the record’s ten tracks, which makes for a very personal-sounding piece of work, and this is exactly the kind of thing that reflective, late-night conversations were made for. Rock, blues, R&B – whatever you want to call it – this is simply stunning stuff, and perfectly crafted songs such as “Man on Fire,” “Cool Hand Rider,” and “Better Day” are akin to seeing God.

That Running Wild is so vigorous and vibrant is a delightful thing to experience, and it truly sounds and feels as if Schorr is living every moment of each lyric and composition. This is an excellent blues LP and one that deserves your attention, and for the record, “Call It Freedom” may well turn out to be the best, most heartfelt, and touching tune you will hear this year.
