Oslo’s Glasblume is something quite out of the ordinary and a wonderful addition to the alternative music scene, which is evident in every nook and cranny of the eleven deftly executed compositions that their deeply atmospheric debut LP appropriately titled City in Rain is comprised of. Honestly, I could not think of a better label to release something as special and reflective as this output than Gymnocal Industries.

Mixing noise rock, ambient soundscapes, trip hop, and electronica in the most effective way possible and making it all flow organically is something that this skilled and intriguing duo has down to a tee, and the all-pervading sense of sadness and longing that permeates and shapes the essence of the song material is nothing if not rousing and soul-penetrating. Its lyrics conjure up vivid images of lonely walks around city centers at night, of long journeys filled with hope and longing, of terse phone calls that leave you empty and alone, and of promises made in the waking hours of dreary day that are meant to be broken. Introspective, emotionally charged, and occasionally unnerving would be one way of summarizing the richly textured world of sound that Glasblume so effortlessly bring to life here, and I could easily see fans of Portishead, Massive Attack, and arguably even PJ Harvey’s Is This Desire? album being swept away by City of Rain.

There is something beautiful and hypnotic hiding underneath its electronic and oftentimes dissonant and noisy surface, which means that this is a journey best embarked on alone as listening to it almost feels akin to the kind of hurtful conversation that all of us try to steer clear of.
