The phrase “highly anticipated” does not quite do this one justice in that we are talking about a marvelous new opus by the original Alice Cooper group – the first one in fifty years no less. Excited? You should be as this one is a real belter in more ways than one.
So, what exactly does this brand-new and villainous output sound like? Well, for one thing, it is just as brilliant and entertaining as one could have hoped for, and it carries that genuine and authentic 70s vibe that many strive for but very few can actually pull off in a convincing manner. Its fourteen tracks (sixteen if you include the two bonus tracks) are catchy and memorable but with sufficient depth and substance to warrant endless listens, and the lyrics are just as humorous, sardonic, and charmingly horror-filled as expected. The LP is to all intents and purposes old-school shock rock of the highest caliber performed by the pioneers of the genre. Alice is on fine form throughout, and his voice adds plenty of edge and atmosphere to the compositions. The interplay between Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith, and Glen Buxton is superb, and although the songs possess that very same rawness and dynamic nature that made records such as Killers and Love It to Death timeless and rewarding, there is a certain level of experience and expertise underlying The Revenge of Alice Cooper that makes this 2025 album stand out in other ways. Call it massive confidence or cohesion, but the fact remains that this is a staggeringly good and well-written piece of work.
The fact that Robby Krieger of The Doors appears on opening track named “Black Mamba” is all the reason you need to invest your time and hard-earned cash in this delightful gem by the masters of the genre. Just wait until you hear “One Night Stand,” “Kill the Flies,”, and “What a Syd” – they will thrill you to bits. A most welcome return!
