ERZSEBET – The Blasphemous Lady

Symphonic black metal with a raw edge to it is what we have here and this Countess Bathory-themed EP consisting of six tracks is some rather interesting stuff in large part due to good melodies, varied vocal work, and a sinister aura.
Alternating between fast-paced, tremolo-picked parts and slow, brooding sections, the sound of "The Blasphemous Lady" is one of darkness and melancholy toppled with strong melodies and interesting song structures. Although there is nothing new to what they do as such, they totally succeed in conjuring up a morose and ominous feel and things never turn too pompous or cliched to these ears. The production is neither lo-fi nor is it massive-sounding and powerful, but there is something about its rough edges and overall vibe that works in its favor and enhances the overall atmosphere.
The fact that it is not too polished or refined adds a cool underground touch to it and I must say that I like what I am hearing here. Worth checking out for those of you who do not mind keyboard-heavy black metal with a gothic grandeur to it.
