Let it be known that yours truly is quite fond of AOR stalwarts Unruly Child and it is great to see that these skilled musicians have been as creative and productive as they have these past few years. Having said that, their previous offering (”Big Blue World” from 2019) was mediocre at best and lacked superb songs, but that is all in the past and this 2020 opus titled ”Our Glass House” is a delightful musical treat and sees the band firing on all cylinders again.
There is absolutely no shortage of infectiously catchy choruses or glorious melodies here and the tunes are nicely arranged and contain many interesting nuances and characteristics. The sharp and heavy ”Say What You Want” is a personal favorite, the melancholy vibe of the track ”Glass House” is moving, and ”The Wooden Monster” is a playful and wicked piece with a muscular drive to it. The re-recorded version of ”Let’s Talk About Love” is superfluous and rather forgettable, but that is more or less the only negative thing that I can come up with right now.
Did I mention how potent the riffs are in general throughout or how the sound of the album is polished but packs plenty of punch and does the song material justice? I am utterly pleased with this disc and Unruly Child may in fact just have delivered one of their most energetic and kick-ass records yet. The future of melodic hard rock and AOR is looking bright indeed.
