STORM CORROSION – Storm Corrosion

STORM CORROSION – Storm Corrosion

Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson and Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt finally join forces in their new progressive side project Storm Corrosion. Drummer Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree aids the proceedings, but I must warn you that those expecting some metal aspect to this 6 song, 47 minute effort will be sorely disappointed. Very minimalistic, ambient, ethereal, with vocal harmonies in the Genesis/ Yes mold, songs like “Drag Ropes” and “Lock Howl” test the patience of listeners with every pass.

The guitar playing is very clean and precise, the keyboard work creating rhythmic echo waves. Tension builds and dives much like an eerie sci-fi soundtrack. I have to be in the right frame of mind to fully engage with Storm Corrosion- it serves a purpose I’m sure but not when I’m in an aggressive or tense mood. Certainly unique in comparison to what’s on the market, the prog-lite/ new age sounds from this trio will appeal to probably the far reaching followers, as the mainstream will not know what to do with these arrangements.

Not my cup of tea.
