DEATHFIST – Too Hot To Burn

DEATHFIST – Too Hot To Burn

My first shock comes into play when I look up biographical background information on this Germany quartet and find the voice ripping up the microphone happens to be Corinna Becker. You wouldn’t know by the likes of “Apotheosis” and “Demons” that a female can be so evil and raw with her approach- but this would be one aspect that is quite convincing on “Too Hot To Burn”, the debut album from Deathfist. Forming in 2008, they quickly released a demo and EP to the world the following year, and here we are with 12 quick hitting metal numbers sure to appease the fan who likes substance over polish.

Three bands come to mind when I listen to songs like “Slay Her”, “Killing Time” and “Prey”- the go for the throat impact of Exciter, the youthful excitement of Razor and of course, a love for all things Slayer from “Show No Mercy” and “Hell Awaits” especially. Drummer Tormentor isn’t afraid to be slightly loose in his lightning fast fill work and the rest of Deathfist would never be mistaken for schooled, theory minded musicians- which suits me just fine. Sometimes you just need the primal, party-oriented gallop of “Booze Brigade” or the anthem-like “Deathfist” to turn a horrible day into one of grinning aural ecstasy.

These Germans will not be mistaken for innovators in the speed/thrash realm. However, for those of us who welcome the occasional return to 1983-1985 in our metal adventures “Too Hot To Burn” provides enough weight with meaty riffs and blistering passion to get the job done.
