A Tribute To MAYHEM: 15 Underground Bands, One Norwegian Black Metal Institution

Antichrist Magazine is putting together another tribute, this time for Mayhem. The album comes out on November 20, with 14 underground bands taking on songs from different stages of the Norwegian band’s career.

There’s no shortage of Mayhem tributes out there, and picking songs from a band with this kind of history is never going to please everyone. Still, this one has a few interesting choices. The tracklist moves from early material like “Deathcrush” and “Chainsaw Gutsfuck” through classics such as “Freezing Moon” and “Buried by Time and Dust”, before reaching later-era songs including “Grand Declaration of War”, “Psywar” and “Worthless Abominations Destroyed”.

The lineup brings together bands from Europe, North and South America, with acts from Spain, Poland, Argentina, Chile, Serbia, the USA, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Scotland, Bulgaria, Italy and France. Some familiar names from the underground sit alongside acts you may not have come across yet. That’s part of the point: a tribute like this is as much about the bands involved as it is about the music they’re covering.

Mayhem‘s influence on black metal is impossible to ignore, but this isn’t an attempt to retell the band’s history or put another monument on the shelf. It’s 14 bands playing songs that have meant something to them, each in their own way.
