Francis Rossi of Status Quo fame recently released this seventeen-track compilation of various demo versions and alternate takes – many of which relate to his work with and songwriting contribution to the aforementioned Quo – and it is a rather intriguing album in many respects.

Some of the ideas presented on the disc are previously unreleased and have never been heard before in any shape or form, and the liner notes by the renowned musician are a real treat as they put each composition into perspective. Not every tune is a winner as some lack strong melodies and therefore appear forgettable or devoid of substance, but there are some real gems to be discovered here too, and this is definitely an interesting output in an overall perspective. “Pennsylvanian Blues Tonight,” “Another Day,” “Electric Arena,” “Strike Like Lightning,” and especially “You’ll Come Around” are heaps of fun, and the great thing about The Way We Were is that it highlights Rossi’s different influences ranging from classic rock ‘n’ roll, blues rock, country, and pop music quite nicely. In addition, these demo takes contain a loose, laidback, and intuitive feel that is utterly charming.

The record may not be essential as such, but for the most part it is delightfully entertaining and a good listen. Fans of Quo would definitely want to investigate this material further.
