DATADYR ANNOUNCE THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THEIR 2ND ALBUM FOR IS IT JAZZ? RECORDS

Norwegian jazz trio DATADYR was the second signing on the newly formed Is it Jazz? Records back in 2022, and the label went on to release the young band’s first album “Woolgathering” in June of that year.

Datadyr’s new album “This We Know”, which will be released on April 25th, is a more mature and confident outing from the young band. The band is still inspired by traditional American music like jazz, blues, bluegrass and folk but with a greater focus on songwriting and structure than their debut.

The first single is “Star Spangled Banjo” and was be released on the 13th of March, and can be streamed or downloaded on a number of locations:

As the band explained:
“Star Spangled Banjo” is the first single from the album. With its nursery rhyme simplicity its appeal is more about the performance than the tune itself. The frantic drumming and infectious groove distinguish it from the rest of the album and is the band’s attempt at making a real “barn burner”.
The album also reflects an outsiders’ view on current events in the states, political and otherwise.  It’s easy to get caught up in the old romantic image of America, especially growing up in Norway surrounded by and idolizing American art and media. The current state of the nation is one far removed from that idealist view the band grew up with, and this album is about the process of realization and eventually accepting that a place that produced so much of what you love is now responsible for so much of what you hate.

Recorded at the Solslottet studio at Bergen Kjøtt with Iver Sandøy as the engineer and producer, and with cover art by Eigil Nordstrøm, tracklisting on “This We Know” is as follows:

1. This We Know (featuring Aksel Røed on sax)
2. Star Spangled Banjo
3. Tiny House Small Living
4. Dallas Alice
5. South of Midnight (featuring Aksel Røed on sax)
6. Lotusdance
7. Kindling
8. Point Blank
9. Looking for Colorado

With all three members having studied jazz at the Grieg Academy, DATADYR’s lineup of Øystein Høynes on bass, Amund Nordstrøm on drums and Odd Erlend Mikkelsen on guitars, have garnered experience in bands such as KRYPTOGRAF, DREAMARCHER, ATARI, CORT PIIL and TREVERKET.

By combining their extensive studies with their accumulated experience, the trio has been able to create a sound characterized by traditional jazz, along with newer directions in the genre, as well as improvisation.
