TARJA – Rocking Heels: Live at Metal Church

  • Rating: 4 / 6

Tarja Turunen hardly needs any introduction, and she is undoubtedly a much-loved and highly praised vocalist by fans of symphonic metal and gothic metal (and with good reason I might add as she possesses a rather unique and charismatic voice). Rocking Heels took me by surprise as it features live renditions of various cover songs such as ‘Trust’ (Megadeth), ‘The Unforgiven’ (Metallica), ‘Alias’ (In Flames), ‘Vermilion Pt. 2’ (Slipknot), and many other pleasant surprises that are bound to excite those of you who are fans of her work. Personally, I have never been a huge fan her work, but I do admire her talent, and the funny thing is that this particular record appeals to me greatly and is arguably the most entertaining release of hers that I have come across. Interpreting songs by Joe Satriani, Linking Park, Rammstein, and Avenged Sevenfold along with the aforementioned treats by Metallica, In Flames, and Megadeth and then adapting and arranging the material for cello, piano, violin, and vocals works incredibly well here. The performance has a nicely intimate aura to it, and there is more passion than grandeur to this mellow and creative offering, which suits me just perfectly. A couple of her own originals close out this enjoyable output in style.
