GROUNDBREAKER – Soul To Soul

GROUNDBREAKER – Soul To Soul

I found the self-titled debut album (2018) by these melodic rockers an enjoyable listen full of hooks and earworms, and so I was looking forward to this crisp-sounding new LP of theirs. Is it as good and memorable as its predecessor then? Well, the insanely talented Steve Overland (FM) is always right on the money and his vocals are superb, but that is hardly surprising given that he is one of the best singers out there to these ears.

The rest of the ensemble chime in with an all-around solid performance and there is no faulting the musicianship, but sadly, the song material is neither particularly inspired nor remarkable. Despite their best efforts, the group fail to deliver any real highlights or anything outstanding. Overland’s voice is magnificent but "Soul to Soul" suffers from mediocre compositions that simply do not manage to enthrall or impress me.

The record never takes flight and as frustrating as it is to admit, I am disappointed in this output. The elegantly crafted hooks and big, tasty choruses are sorely lacking and this slick, polished album offers very little in terms of quality, depth, and longevity.
