SEVENTH CRYSTAL – Delirium

Swedish quintet Seventh Crystal is a relatively new addition to the melodic hard rock scene and this sparkling debut offering of theirs is a slick, professional-sounding piece of work that packs a punch while simultaneously bombarding the listener with pop-like hooks and great vocals.
There is very little that is new or different here compared to many similar-sounding acts out there, but these guys have a certain way of presenting and delivering their song material that kind of defies the fact that this is merely their first record. They churn out heavy yet melodically rich tunes that possess more conviction and focus than most and there is a good flow to the album throughout. Even though the output is rather polished and boasts an incredibly crisp sound, it is certainly not devoid of atmosphere or feeling, which is perhaps best exemplified by the standout track in the shape of the moody "When I’m Gone" and the hard-hitting title track – both of which revolve around weighty themes while sounding fresh and quite epic in scope. The stadium-sized groove that is "Time to Let It Go" also deserves praise for its strong melodies and arrangements. The disc does lose a bit of steam towards the end with "Déjà Vu" being the least interesting track and "Hope It Will be Alright" lacking a proper dramatic climax, but in general this is a good album and one that is full of potential.
"Delirium" is a very promising debut, and it will be interesting to see what this skilled group will come up with the next time around. Fans of W.E.T., H.E.A.T., Perfect Plan, and One Desire ought to check this one out.
