HEBOIDOPHRENIE – Cannibalism for Dummies

HEBOIDOPHRENIE – Cannibalism for Dummies

The French act Heboidophrenie offers tight, semi-technical, and sharply executed deathcore/death metal that is as catchy as it is vile and suitably gory. The infectious riffs, crushing breakdowns, and gut-piercing drums all work like a charm while the varied vocals get the job done in an effective and efficient manner. Is “Cannibalism for Dummies” original by any stretch of the imagination? Fuck no, but it rocks pretty hard in a truly dark and foul way, and there are some well-crafted melodies and ideas in play here. Apart from being melodically rich, there are also several prominent thrash metal influences present in this rather toxic mix. Certain parts recall Jungle Rot and Dying Fetus while others are reminiscent of what Obituary and Aborted often tend to do, and in this case right here it just works.

As stated before, there is not a single shred of musical innovation to be found here, but that hardly matters as this eleven-track effort is an entertaining and solid listen that pretty much sucks you in the first time you spin the disc thanks to its hummable jackhammer riffs and killer grooves. The idea of presenting its rumbling musical content as a menu is either quite fitting or a tad gimmicky depending on one’s point of view, but the disc is divided into three parts where you get a starter, a main dish, and a dessert.  The album is neither outstanding nor one for the history books (and it does seem to fall squarely between old-school death metal and the slightly more modern and technically-minded variety of said genre), but it is utterly solid from start to finish and loaded with wicked tunes.

Standout tracks: "Techno Messiah" and "Bleeding Love".
