SATAN WORSHIP – Teufelssprache

SATAN WORSHIP – Teufelssprache

The scummy black/thrash metal maniacs known as Satan Worship unleashed this raw, skull-bashing collection of vile songs via Folter Records not that long ago and musically speaking, this opus evokes the aura of Venom and early Sodom as well as Old and Trench Hell just to list a few examples. “Teufelssprache” is their sophomore effort, but where exactly do we stand with this one and what does it offer?

The foul trio has opted for a straightforward and unpolished approach to their particular cocktail of old-school black metal and 80s-ispired thrash metal, but unfortunately, the result is somewhat mediocre, predictable, and run-of-the-mill. I love unhinged and filthy black/thrash where it often sounds and feels as if things are about to fall apart as much as the next guy, but the nine cuts that constitute “Teufelssprache” do tend to follow more or less the same pattern with too few of them actually standing out or taking off completely. Having said that, the record is not without its share of wicked moments, which primarily has to do with the varied and rumbling album closer “Aokigahara” and the morbid “La Catedral” containing a good dose of truly sinister riffs, atmospheric parts, and hyper-aggressive outbursts that make them the standout tracks on the disc.

“Teufelssprache” does have an air of authenticity and a genuine appreciation for ancient bone-crunching metal about it, but it lacks staying power and it is neither sufficiently memorable nor fiery enough to truly stand out among so many other similar releases out there. I really do wish that it had boasted catchier tunes and been a tad more deranged and caustic overall, but hopefully, their next (i.e. their third) LP might just to the trick and blow us all to smithereens. Time will tell, but you can skip this one unless you are a die-hard fan of the genre.
