The Spanish black/death metal squadron Abisme offers a blistering take on aggressive yet melodically rich extreme metal that clearly owes a lot (and in some respects pays homage) to Swedish acts such as Sacramentum, Necrophobic, Dissection, At the Gates, and Dismember. Relentless and punishing, “As Fear Falls In” shows depth and skill with respect to the song arrangements and the impressive musicianship, and on top of that, the tracks are generally quite catchy thanks to the riffs and melodies being strong and memorable.

 

Plenty of twists and turns abound too and I must say that I am digging the power and bombast of this wicked little opus. The eerie piano-led album closer “The Struggle” and the sinister “Gateless Call” are arguably the standouts and highlights of the disc.

Abisme possesses potential aplenty and “As Fear Falls In” is a nicely varied affair that never really runs out of steam or loses momentum. There is nothing new under the sun here as such, but lovers of intense black/death metal ought to check this one out. Recommended!
