RING VAN MÖBIUS – Past the Evening Sun

RING VAN MÖBIUS – Past the Evening Sun

The Norwegian prog rockers Ring Van Möbius are a highly captivating and interesting musical ensemble capable of conjuring up sublime and otherworldly soundscapes reminiscent of pioneering acts such as King Crimson, ELP, and Van Der Graaf Generator. There is something magical about the way in which Ring Van Möbius weave their intricate yet strangely pleasant and memorable melodies together to such a great effect while looking to both the past and the future.

The warm and organic sound of the record is to die for and the musicianship is splendid all around. The different moods and atmospheres that are evoked throughout have a timeless and a rather subtle melancholy quality to them with “End of Greatness” undoubtedly being the most haunting and moving tunes of the bunch. The song arrangements and structures are quite daring and brave as well, especially in “Chasing the Horizon” where things come together only to be pulled apart again, which adds an unpredictable and exciting edge to the proceedings. The song material covers the abstract as well as the introspective and somewhat introverted.

Those dichotomies and juxtapositions that constantly wrestle with each other within the tracks could have resulted in a disaster, but instead these dudes guys it off beautifully and it all makes sense…and wonderfully so. A testament to just how fucking awesome these dudes truly are! This is a superb and magnificent prog opus that every lover of the aforementioned genre ought to invest in. Locate your favorite armchair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, press play, and immerse yourself wholeheartedly in the three long and sprawling compositions that constitute “Past the Evening Sun” – you will not regret it.
