PIG’S BLOOD – Pig’s Blood

PIG’S BLOOD – Pig’s Blood

The revolting quartet that is Pig’s Blood hails from the US, more specifically Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and this ugly-sounding self-titled effort of theirs is the band’s debut onslaught. What these guys offer is bestial, barbaric, and blackened death metal of the rumbling, violent, and bombastic kind. The vibes and atmospheres that emanate from the ten sickening tunes that constitute "Pig’s Blood" are murky and depraved as hell and bring to mind quite a few other acts such as Conqueror, Blasphemy, Beherit, Archgoat, and Black Witchery, but not necessarily because "Pig’s Blood" sounds exactly like any of them. There is just something about the foul mood that emanates from this record that reminds me of those other outfits, but as usual, I digress. A relentless barrage of intense drums, pulverizing and somewhat simple riffs, growled and perverted vocals, and an oppressive aura that makes life worth leaving are what is in store for you here.

"Pig’s Blood" is slightly similar to some of the other chaotic and unpleasant black/death/thrash metal releases that Godz ov War have spewed forth over the years in terms of both sound and style, which is cool as the aforementioned label has released a number of great records since its inception, but this particular album lacks strong, memorable parts. It never really manages to either convince me fully or simply blow me the fuck away. Still, there are some cool parts to be found in places not to mention that wicked tracks such as "Torches of War and Retribution" and "The Age of Endless War" are worth checking out, but from an overall perspective I think it is fair to say that a bit more variety and dynamics would have done wonders for the album. Either way, it will be interesting to see what these fuckers will come up with next and how their particular take on hyper-aggressive and nasty underground metal might evolve.
