THE GREAT WOUND – Voices of Regret

THE GREAT WOUND – Voices of Regret

The Great Wound is a blackened (melodic) death metal duo hailing from Spain, and this debut album of theirs entitled "Voices of Regret" is quite convincing and interesting to listen to. While the production is strong and powerful, the songs strike a nice balance between being slightly technical on the one hand and memorable on the other. In that sense, the music may be said to fall somewhere in between the challenging and the catchy, but strong melodies and riffs are clearly at the forefront here and run through the entire album from start to finish. As to the melodies, The Great Wound are clearly inspired by bands such as Dissection, Naglfar, and Old Man`s Child, although the more brutal outbursts bring to mind Belphegor and Behemoth in places.

In the overall perspective, "Voices of Regret" is neither an original nor innovative release, but the songs are well-written and the arrangements are quite cool. The symphonic parts that creep in from time to time add a bit of diversity to the thing and acually work well. Definitely a nice surprise and one that grows on you each time you spin it. Good stuff.
