STORMBRINGER – Blood & Rust

STORMBRINGER – Blood & Rust

This UK stoner/heavy metal band Stormbringer warms my heart right out of the gate as the opening riff to "Clutchy" assimilates the best of "Detroit Rock City" and Thin Lizzy, while vocalist Jimi Brown possesses the necessary swagger and pipes to reach at the hearts of headbangers everywhere. "Blood & Rust" is the quintet’s second album, and the energy flows briskly through the 10 songs in the main riffs, commercial-oriented hooks, and slightly modern, low-end rumble that makes "Rise" and "Cross to Bare" two memorable tracks.

Stretching parameters through the 7 minute ballad "War" which accentuates drummer Jon Paul Quantrill’s groove and bluesy instrumental prowess from guitarists Ash Smith and Dom Wallace, the record closes on an intriguing note as well with "Psychokiller", previously made famous through the Talking Heads. Stormbringer give their spin a little bit more of a darker, alt-gothic take which should see crowds light up if they choose to add this to their live shows.

Uplifting and adrenaline rising, Stormbringer can appeal to fans of Velvet Revolver as much as Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath – which could push them out of the pure ‘retro’ mold in the long run.
