SOULLINE – We Curse, We Trust

SOULLINE – We Curse, We Trust

‘We Curse, We Trust’ is the third full-length from Swiss melodic death metallers SoulLine. Imagine a triangle with Dark Tranquility at one corner, HIM on another and Katatonia on the last. The sound of ‘We Curse, We Trust’ falls somewhere in the space between the three points. At times we have DM vocals, and at others we have a variety of clean vocals all of which work extremely well. Only the Hetfield-esque vocals of track 6, ‘Sleepers Statement’ fall short of the mark for me.

Soundwise, the emphasis is on the melodic characteristics, so those seeking a release that will stick them to the wall with raw power had best look elsewhere – the DM element is subordinate here. Those who want good harmonies, well constructed songs and catchy choruses have come to the right place. There are plenty of passages that will stick in your head and do the rounds even after you have switched this one off.

It is always good to discover a relatively unknown band like SoulLine who can come up with such a mature and polished offering (‘We Curse, We Trust’ it was mixed by Peter Tatgren and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry, Sonic Syndicate, Katatonia)).

My only problem with this release is that I think side two isn’t as strong as side one. The songs don’t grip as firmly and don’t stick in the listeners head as long. Still, this a great effort overall and definitely worth checking out if this is your kind of thing…
