SABATON – Carolus Rex

SABATON – Carolus Rex

For this melodic power metal act from Sweden, the way to challenge themselves (and their listeners) is to record a new studio album with two versions: one completely in their native Swedish tongue, and the other for English language listeners. “Carolus Rex” continues their war themed anthem style, with prototype arrangements designed for active audience involvement. The guitar play runs hand in hand with the deep keyboard chord progressions, especially evident on more epic sounding material like “The Carolean’s Prayer” or “Long Live The King”. The front half of the album loads itself with the faster, call and response material, of which “1648” and “The Lion From The North” are adequate additions to the Sabaton vast array of power metal material.

Much better than 2010’s “Coat Of Arms”, it should be interesting to see what direction the follow up takes as Sabaton replaces half of their lineup after the recording of this album.
