WEH – Origins

WEH – Origins

I’m not sure if this should rightfully belong in the metal section. This is a collection of five demos, one unused track, one acoustic cover of Windir’s “Likbør” and five new recorded tracks from Weh. It is all just one acoustic guitar, bass and vocals.

Some few songs have distorted vocals of a somewhat black metal kind, which actually works quite well. The production is actually pretty good, it is all well executed, and the lyrics and melodies are quite catchy. The band proclaim trying to convey dark emotions with their music, but at its darkest this still isn’t any darker than the later albums of Johnny Cash. Sometimes this reminds me of Iggy Pop’s “Social Life”, other times it reminds me of Green Day’s “Time of Your Life”. Some tracks even give me a Simon and Garfunkel vibe.

So I guess it’s not particularly dark, but it nevertheless has its qualities. If you need to rest your ears from pounding metal from time to time, "Origins" could provide a worthwhile breathing room.
