PARALYDIUM Worlds Beyond album cover.jpgThe evocatively titled “Worlds Beyond” by the Swedish act Paralydium turned out to be something quite different to what I usually receive from Frontiers Records in that it leans much more towards progressive metal than the majority of other outfits on the label’s roster. Having said that, the nine well-written and superbly arranged compositions that make up this gorgeous musical feast are steeped in huge melodies and sweeping, epic atmospheres, so perhaps it is not altogether that different to certain other Frontiers bands after all? But then who gives a shit?! The important thing is that this skilled cast of musicians has conceived a cohesive and dynamic LP that is most definitely worthy of your attention.

The production is bright and clear but could have done with a bit more crunch and bombast as the songs here cry out for a truly powerful production capable of pounding your eardrums to kingdom come. In that sense, “Worlds Beyond” does leave something to be desired, but nevertheless, it comes across as a more enthusiastic and less stiff piece of work than countless similar-sounding albums out there by progressive metal groups. There is a real good flow to this one and how can one not love such outstanding and remarkably grandiose anthems as “Crystal of Infinity” and sprawling album closer “Seeker of the Light”? Another fabulous piece is “Within the Sphere” thanks to its splendid riffs. The twists and turns come thick and fast throughout, but the record never loses focus or its notable sense of (melo-)drama. Even the guitar solos are tasteful and melodic.

“Worlds Beyond” does require several spins before it really starts to reveal its many layers and leave a mark on the listener, but having said that, it does bag plenty of memorable choruses and tasty riffs that will peak your interest the very first time you listen to it. I found it to be a suitably challenging yet nicely refreshing opus to immerse myself in and if you crave a progressive and somewhat technical metal record with a vigorous sense of purpose and determination to it, I suggest you check this one out. You do not have to be a fan of Dream Theater, Symphony X, or Seventh Wonder to appreciate Paralydium’s engaging musical atmosphere.
