tyranex_unabletotamecover.jpgActive since 2005, the Swedish speed/thrash outfit Tyranex contain a lot of the raw, youthful qualities that attracted me to this genre in my teen years. "Unable to Tame" is their second full-length album, an 8 song affair that whirls by in a tidy 36 minutes. What makes this exciting is the fact that the quartet waste no time with over-indulgent technicality or ‘look at me now' individual showmanship - Tyranex prefer to let each individual track speak as to their philosophy.

The acidic, wild vocals for guitarist Linnea Landstedt need to be heard to be believed. Much like what happened in the power genre with hearing Leather Leone from Chastain for the first time, Linnea's work is in line more with Sabrina of Holy Moses than any of the normal smooth, siren female singers you hear in other European bands. Expect drumming where the snare hits are similar to an open metal pot than anything triggered or synthetic, a wall of guitars that crush and bass that is part Motörhead, part punk, and 100% attitude fueled. Songs like "Take the Torch" and the title track have a touch of that NWOBHM hook nature - while also being very thrashy and speedy as in the early Exciter, Razor, or Holy Moses days - along with a touch of the early 1983-1985 blood & sweat spirit of Metallica and Megadeth.

There is certain evil quality to many of the riffs at times - making "Invasion of Evil" and "Bloodlust and War" two of my favorites, and also proving that Tyranex can be speedy and punchy for the most part but also know that you can also deliver strong parts at occasional mid-tempo or doomy paces. Those that are tired of cut and paste Pro Tools efforts and want something more primal, "Unable to Tame" is your ideal companion. Bang thy heads, circle the pit, hoist the horns high!
