When did you start doing extreme vocals (What year and at what age)?

I think that was in 2007. I was 20 years old. A friend of mine (our guitar player today) sent me a record of a song he was playing with his band. I told him that I like that song very much and I would like to try doing the vocals for that one. So he invited me and I tried some techniques. We recorded the whole song in about 4 hours and he said my vocals were great. It was the first experience in extreme vocals I´ve ever had. One week later I started doing the vocals for Cypecore.

What made you start to do extreme vocals?

I started listening to metal with extreme vocals at the age of 13 I think. I like it very much. With Cypecore I got the chance to do such vocals on my own. After the first recording session at Nils´ home, the guys from Cypecore asked me if I really would like to do it with a live band and I said yes.

Can you describe the technique or the techniques you are using?

That's really difficult to describe. I never wanted to do just "death" vocals. I wanted to do many different styles. Actually I would say it´s a special kind of feeling that you have while you´re doing it. The biggest mistake you can do is to build up so much pressure in your throat that your vocal chords begin to hurt. It is a feeling which comes directly out of your stomach. A very good friend of mine which studies medicine told me that there is some gristle in our throat beneath your vocal chords which you can use to make such sounds.

Has your technique changed during your career?

Yes it changed a lot. At the beginning it was more this "death" sound. Nowadays I figured out how to make various sounds between that typical "death" sound and real singing like for example Anders Fridén. It´s like singing and opening up the bottom of your throat.

Have you ever hurt yourself by using a "wrong technique"?

After that first recording session I went home with a red throat and the biggest headache I´ve ever had in my life. I woke up at night and I thought I would never do something like that anymore. At the next day I woke up, ate a bit and everything was allright again. After that experience I figured out my own technique and recognized that I really have to care about how I do such vocals.

Is there something you do on a regular basis to keep your voice in shape? Any routines?

I keep my voice in shape by practising with the band.

Do you think it can be dangerous to do extreme vocals?

No, in fact you do it the right way. Your body will tell you if you´re doing it wrong. If your throat hurts after a rehearsal you´re doing something wrong.

What is most important for you - to make cool sounds and interesting rhythms, or to have a clear diction/pronunciation?

I try to mix these things.

Do you think that extreme vocals can be made into a science, like "this is how it works for everyone, to make this sound you have to do this etc"? Or is it more intuitive and individual how to do it?

You can already by such DVDs. It's called "The Zen of Screaming". Melissa Cross is showing you how to do extreme vocals right. It's very interesting. If you haven't seen it before you have to watch it.

Do you have any advice to people who wants to start doing extreme vocals?

You can't do it quiet, you have to do it loud and powerful. Do it without pressure and get the power from your stomach. Always take care about your throat.

Mention three extreme vocalists whose style you admire, and explain your choice. What specifically do you like about the styles of those three? Also mention three vocalists (not necessarily extreme vocalists) which you have been influence by, and explain in which way you have been influenced by each of them.

I like the style of David Randall Blythe (Lamb of God). It's pure "death" but his voice is exactly that kind of "death" voice which I like. It's because his pronunciation. Everything is clear and filled with pure hate.

I love the style of Anders Fridén (In Flames). He is my favourite metal band singer. He got this perfect combination between "death" and "melodic". There are so much various feelings in each of their songs.

These are exactly the two vocalists which I have been influenced by.

Who do you want to challenge in this series? (Who should be the next extreme vocalist to answer these questions?) Give a brief explanation for your choice.
