This scribe was quite smitten with the fully formed and utterly rewarding debut offering by the eclectic Norwegian prog rockers The Dredge featuring Helheim drummer Frode “Hrymr” Røsjø, which saw the light of day a couple of years ago, so naturally, expectations were high for their sophomore effort. Sporting the evocative title Down the Beach and even better artwork, it looks nothing if not intriguing, and I am pleased to say that the song material leaves little to be desired. Where the debut album veered slightly towards alt. rock, grunge, and prog, their latest batch of sparkling tracks emphasize the proggier and jazzier aspects of their tone and style, and they often conjure up an eclectic and quirky vibe that has more in common with art rock and post-rock than any of the aforementioned genres. Boundaries, categorizations, and conventional thinking are lukcily irrelevant to these chaps.

Anchored by a solid rhythm section that serves up groove and finesse, its eight compositions capture fearless energy and also a rare balance between euphoria and calm. The lyrics may not win the Nobel Prize in Literature, but they are rather clever and interesting in places, and they undoubtedly appeal to the mind’s eye in that they revolve around relatable everyday situations and human relationships in more ways than one. You can picture the scenarios outlined in the stanzas quite vividly.

Down the Beach is arguably less melancholy and emotionally charged than its predecessor was, or less moving, if you will, but musically speaking, it feels much more challenging and unpredictable in the positive sense of those words, and the creative evolution that is reflected throughout the album almost reads like a statement of intent at times. Their most radiant work yet.
