PICTURE ANN – new full length album out

Picture Ann is one of Bergen’s most productive and tenacious solo artists, hiding in the melancholy ambient instrumental universe he has created for himself – and for us.The latest full-length album is out now, at the beginning of October – just in time for the Fall to set in.

With the overall themes that course through the album’s brooding content being control, lies, and manipulation in various guises, the record is an inspired and reflective piece of work that explores the odd and spiteful corners of the mind while also managing to tug at the heartstrings by means of its inherent melancholy. As Picture Ann’s main villain J.N. states, “There Are Only Goodbyes Between Us falls somewhere between the autobiographical and a myriad of different things that I have absorbed either through the eyes and ears of others or via literature.

Semi-autobiographical is obviously the most apt description of the ghastly affair. I initially envisioned its ten tracks as a bleak and windswept cityscape where the laws of corruption and the power of hurtful words ran wild among lost and sin-ridden souls. However, as the compositions began to take proper shape and the lyrics started to crawl across the page, I realized that a significant chunk of the material was essentially about my own failed interactions with my surroundings. That takes us right back to the idea of lies and manipulation being outright corrosive to the human spirit and sending us down dark alleyways where life seemingly goes on going nowhere. Then again, the title signifies redemption and the notion of making sense of one’s past by letting certain things die, so perhaps there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all? You decide.”
