VEGA – Grit Your Teeth

I had the pleasure of watching UK rockers Vega perform in London a few years ago and they impressed me greatly that night. This brand-new record of theirs entitled “Grit Your Teeth” sports a fabulous album cover and the music does not disappoint either. Falling somewhere between ancient Bon Jovi, early Guns ‘N’ Roses, Skid Row, and perhaps even Def Leppard, these guys churn out anthemic hard rock anthems boasting huge, fist-pumping choruses, infectious riffs, and great vocal hooks. The production is ridiculously good and packs plenty of punch while the musicianship leaves nothing to be desired.
The standout cuts and highlights include kick-ass album opener “Blind”, the slightly melancholy “Consequence of Having a Heart”, and the thrilling “Man on a Mission”, which is just begging to be performed live. The disc does run out of steam towards the end and loses its momentum due to the final three songs feeling slightly pedestrian and derivative. Also, despite the fact that “Grit Your Teeth” is a highly entertaining and catchy output it does feel a tad too safe and predictable in places, but perhaps the next one will see them expanding their musical horizons even further?
Overall, this is an uplifting and memorable albeit uneven offering and it does offer a fair amount of exciting and energetic tunes that all you lovers of hard rock and classic rock and whatnot out there ought to cherish and treasure.
