ARC OF LIFE – Arc of Life

ARC OF LIFE – Arc of Life

Arc of Life is a new and incredibly talented constellation of musicians in which present members of Yes figure, and in many ways, the group’s sound and feel is not altogether that different to the aforementioned pioneering prog rock outfit.

Arc of Life’s self-titled effort is clearly inspired by 70s prog rock but there is a subtle and slight 80s sheen to the proceedings too, but overall, it comes across as a current-sounding affair where the compositions are relatively accessible and easy on the ear. There are some fantastic arrangements here that offer both thrills and surprises, and Jon Davison’s superb vocals and Jay Schellen’s amazing drumming really shine and sparkle throughout. With what feels like a fresh perspective on the genre and a crisp, dynamic production, this is a nice slice of prog rock escapism with a solid groove and an invigorating quality to it.

The band’s enthusiasm and joy of creating music together is quire prevalent on the disc and there is nothing pompous or overblown about the album. While the tracks "Just in Sight" and "Locked Down" contain depth and brilliant ideas, "Therefore We Are" is a thing of true beauty and "The End Game" is a fitting, climactic end to a thoroughly good and enjoyable record. Recommended!
