MNEMOCIDE – Feeding the Vultures

MNEMOCIDE – Feeding the Vultures

Now, this is an interesting if not necessarily innovative Basel, Swiss death metal outfit featuring Matthias (vocals), Chris (guitars), Richy (guitars), Niggi Denger (bass) and Laurent (drums), who had already released a "Debris" EP in 2018. Generally Slayer-ic Vader and Behemoth are of easy reference, but then Nile and Gorefest are also present. The riffs are simple yet powerful and catchy and there’s a general sense of accessibility and urgency to the whole affair, but there’s not much either standing out or particularly progressive, just good old death metal with hints of thrash.

Highlights include "Like Ghosts" (preceded by a whispered prelude) which recalls Megadeth’s "Countdown To Extinction" for some reason, the "Inhabit" Living Sacrifice-ial "Fear Me" and the Sepultura-ic/Arch Enemy-ic favorite, the very catchy closer, "Revolution Is Required". Two tracks, the single "Crash & Burn" and "In Pain" are a little too one dimensional and slightly drag the album down.

"Feed The Vultures" is a very good album but it does not offer much beyond the genre, although its immediate and instantly gratifying songwriting is duly noted, as they can write good memorable riffs and melodies. However, once you listen to it twice you will have had your fill and you’ll have been ready to go back to Paradise Lost’s "Obsidian".
