ATRA VETOSUS – Voices From the Eternal Night (2018 Remaster)

This remastered version of Atra Vetosus’ 2013 effort entitled “Voices From the Eternal Night” is a solid slab of melodic and melancholy black metal. Even though this record is not entirely up there with the band’s most recent album (“Apricity”) in terms of bone-chilling effect and quality, it is still a most decent display of how to write memorable and grandiose tunes with an introspective vibe to them. Despite it not being as intense and dramatic as later releases, it is nevertheless shock-full of strong melodies and wonderfully epic currents that ought to satisfy all lovers of this particular brand of black metal. These guys may not be reinventing the wheel here or anything like that, but what they do they do well and tracks such as “A Palace Shrouded in Emptiness” and “Under the Wings of Darkness” are both enjoyable and exciting to listen to.

Album opener “Skies of Obsidian Rain” also contains some rather riveting parts that will send shivers down your spine. The vocals are slightly one-dimensional while the drums have a tendency to sound lifeless here and there, but all in all this is a cool and well-crafted offering.

This record showed a lot of potential back in 2013 and it is great to see that Atra Vetosus have become better since then, but you can tell from this album that they were reaching for stratospheric and monumental heights when they crafted the material for it, which is commendable. Fans of aggressive and melodic metal will probably find this remastered version a rewarding listen – I know that I did.
