KHAOSPATH – …For the Devil Speaks the Truth
The Swedish black horde named Khaospath has struck again! This 2016 opus of theirs entitled "…For the Devil Speaks the Truth", which is the follow-up to the 2014 debut album, consists of nine raw, aggressive, and melodic tunes that hearken back to the early waves of Norwegian and Swedish black metal. While the sound is somewhat rough around the edges and trebly, the album does possess a strange and foggy vibe of sorts that I have a hard time putting into words. At first, this whole musical effort came across as a decent albeit uneventful affair that did not really seem to go anywhere, but the more I listened to it the more I picked up on all these cool and wicked nuances and layers. Gradually, they drew me in. Granted, the trio that is Khaospath has hardly redefined the black metal genre or come up with anything brand new and unutterably exciting as such, but "…For the Devil Speaks the Truth" has a lot of soul and feel to it that permeates nearly every song on the album. In a way, the pure and unfiltered sound works in favor of the album, because at times it almost sounds as if these guys are playing live together and even improvising certain parts. Every instrument is audible and there is an organic, honest, and intuitive quality to the whole thing. Many of the riffs and melodies bring to mind some of the first few releases by Troll and Gorgoroth, but lyrically Khaospath is something else entirely. The words conjured up by these Swedes have a poetic feel to them that make for a great story. I was taken aback by just how good the lyrics are, so hats off to Khaospath for putting a lot of work into those.
"…For the Devil Speaks the Truth" may sound like a traditional black metal assault at first, but give this sucker a bit of time and you will see that it is a solid and memorable mark of musical evil that is actually quite appealing. If nothing else, check out the epic and majestic closing track, "Ravens Downfall".
